BEGGING for advice!

I am in SO. MUCH. PAIN! frown It hurts to breath, move, cough, and sneeze! I have pulled a muscle/having chest spasms due to an incessant cough I have had for two weeks now. I know I am not a heavily commented on blog, but I am begging for good advice today. Does anyone know any good ways to stop coughing???!!!! I obviously can't take much medication being pregnant, and even more limiting; still being in my first trimester. My doctor has prescribed Flonase (sp?) for the congestion, and tylenol for my pain. Does anyone have any old grandma tricks that I can try? I am willing to try just about anything. Recap: HELP with coughing, but no alcohol or medication in your remedy. THANKS!!!

sorry about your cough! :( this probably sounds simple, but have you tried drinking hot tea with honey? that always sooths my cough, although i'm not sure it would help your chest soreness. hope you feel better soon!!!

Vicks vaporub on the soles of your feet and then socks on top (to keep from getting Andrew's legs sticky). Also, rub some Vick's on your chest and throat. Here's some recommendations from a source that I found --although I think I would call the midwife/nurse and double check first.

Cough or cold Guaifenesin, an expectorant (Hytuss, Mucinex, Naldecon Senior EX, Robitussin)

Dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant (Benylin Adult, Robitussin Maximum Strength Cough, Scot-Tussin DM, Vicks 44 Cough Relief)

Guaifenesin plus dextromethorphan (Benylin Expectorant, Robitussin DM, Vicks 44E)

Cough drops

Vicks VapoRub

Avoid cold remedies that contain alcohol. Also avoid the decongestants pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine, which can affect blood flow to the placenta.

I second Suzanne's comments about the menthol vapor rub and guaifenesin. You can get the latter at Whole Foods. Also, the employees roaming the aisles at Whole Foods are quite helpful about recommending stuff for pregnant women (as I found when I was deathly ill whilst preggo with Ina). Hope you find something that works! And congrats on the newest baby C!! (although I think you're crazy!!)

Thanks for all your suggestions! I have been drinking hot tea with honey, using Vicks in our humidifier, and using a netti pot for a week or so. I haven't called the midwife yet. The pharmacist strongly urged no medication whatsoever since I am so early in the pregnancy. He was nice about it, but he pretty much said you have already pulled the muscle... its going to hurt. frown!

Thanks again for all the suggestions!

@Suzanne, did you know CWHC has a new midwife?! I am seeing her next visit.

@Sarah, thanks for the congrats! And yes, I am still having moments where I think you are right, we ARE crazy! wink Hope you guys are doing well. We sure do miss you!
