Yesterday we took the children to the NC Museum of Art after church. I forget sometimes how lucky we are to live in (relatively) close proximity to amazing museums that are FREE!!! ha Not only does the Art Museum have exhibits (permanent and traveling), but it also has a 160 acre park. The park has art exhibits scattered throughout the grounds, nature trails, picnic tables, an ampitheather, etc. It really is an awesome place to just go and explore.
After reading a book about Edgar Degas, and the children LOVING the paintings and sculptures; we thought we would 'try' the museum. I knew we wouldn't make it through both buildings, but I figured we could make it as far as we could and then go run in the park. They really did an amazing job. Both Ceilidh and Graeme were engaged as they walked around looking, asking questions, and commenting (even if loudly at times, wink) their likes and dislikes. The only mishap we had was the exhibit laying on the floor that looked like flat stone bricks. Ceilidh decided to step on one of them (ekkkk), and of course it slammed to the floor with a huge thud. Thankfully, nothing broke; and none of the employees were around! ha She was very embarrassed (frown), but it elicited one of my favorite comments of the day. "But it didn't LOOK like art, Mommy!" HA That is exactly what her daddy said. wink
We walked around for probably about 25 - 30 minutes and decided to take them to the park b/c Jane realized she liked to hear her scream echo off the museum walls. She laughed through the whole experience as I (slightly horrified) scooted her out the door quickly. ha As we were walking out, Graeme comes up with the second favorite comment of the day. "Let's get out of here!" He was definitely ready to run. wink
The weather was amazing, and they ran up and over hills, through exhibits, dodged bikes, and laughed at 'pup pups' the whole afternoon! Probably the best quote of the day came as we were walking through the park and came up to a huge sculpture of a person's body lying in a quasi fetal position. Ceilidh (in her normal loud as all get out voice) states, " Momma, that is literally someone's bottom!" HA If you live remotely close to the NC Museum of Art, you should check it out!
