The tea party that broke our heart

I have known it was happening. It has been happening for about a year now. I could tell by little looks or simple questions that the wheels were turning in her sweet little head. I had sort of been prepping myself for the conversation; but didn't realize that a tea party, an innocent tea party that happens multiple times a day in our home would finally lead to the discovery.

Santa Claus has been a slightly contested subject in our house from the beginning. I love Christmas, but I love it for the incredible miracle that occurred that seemingly common night. It began the earthly beginning of my soul's rescue. I feel pretty strongly that it shouldn't be misplaced or overlooked for a fat man in a big red suit who brings presents. All that to say, there is something magical about children's excitement over Santa's mysteries and Christmas morning. So, we decided to include Santa in our Christmas' but with a very concerted effort that he stayed in the background. I feel that there is some merit to the argument that he teaches children to believe in something they can't see (faith), but I also don't like the idea of lying to my children (or the perceived idea of lying). Once they started asking if he was real, I have always responded with "What do you think?," and then quickly move on to asking them other questions like, "What would you like this year?" HA

Back to the tea party... Jane received this tea set at Christmas from Santa. Ceilidh asked to join us and started 'pouring' her tea. As she was tilting the pot, she noticed the 'Pottery Barn Kids' on the bottom. I knew she did. Her face was a mixture of confusion, realization, and embarrassment. She noticed that I was watching her and I played it off by continuing to play; but she continued to steal glances at the bottom of the pot and cups throughout the 'party.' I didn't want to push anything that didn't need to be, but I also didn't want to miss out on an opportunity to be 'available' to her. Later on that afternoon, a normal conversation lended itself to nonchalantly confirm to them that we would always to be willing to talk about anything they wanted/needed; and then left it at that.

At bedtime, she was pretty quiet and throwing the covers over her head asked if we could talk; but somewhere where Jane couldn't hear her. :) At this point, I was holding up well. I want them to know they can always approach us without fear of me crying my eyes out in nervousness, fear, or shock. Even if my insides are flipping circles! Ha Andrew got Graeme settled so he can join us. She jumps in our bed, and with the tinniest voice I have ever heard come out of her mouth asked, "Is Santa real?" This wasn't an 'Im asking but don't really want to know' which had happened many times before; this was the real thing. She really wanted to know. And she already knew. But she didn't want to accept the reality of the answer. She told us about the tea pot and how that didn't seem to add up. We gently told her that we were 'Santa', but that there was a real Saint Nicholas and Santa had evolved from that story to encourage generosity and love. Poor thing (and poor parents!) didn't know what to do with emotions. She was embarrassed for asking and sad that the 'magic' wasn't true. We really encouraged her that she didn't need to be embarrassed at ALL, and that the 'magic' didn't have to be gone. We still love the story of Santa even as adults and now she could help with some of the gift finding/giving (which she has always loved). We made it clear though, that even if she helped find 1 or 2 gifts for her siblings that there were going to still be LOTS of surprises for them and ALL of hers would be surprises. She seemed pretty satisfied with that. ;) She told us she wanted G and J to still believe so she wouldn't tell them and we have checked out a few books about the true Saint Nicholas. She has gobbled them up!

As Andrew and I have talked about that night quite a bit, I have to say I could care less that she knows about Santa. In fact, it is selfishly kind of a relief for me. I really have never been comfortable with how to deal with 'Santa.' My emotions that night came from the fact that her 'innocence' is slowing but steadily eroding. Not her innocence in regards to crazy teenage type behavior, but more the wonder of childhood innocence. As I always say, I'm thankful that she is developing spiritually, emotionally, physically, and intellectually well; but it is still hard to let go and allow them to progress through the phases of infancy to hopefully a healthy independent adult.

Summer achievement!

After commenting to another mom at the beginning of the summer that Graeme would probably still be wearing floaties at age 25; this little fish has progressed from screaming for floaties to only stay in 3 feet, to swimming all over the pool WITH floaties, to no floaties but ONLY in 3 feet, to screaming for NO floaties and swimming all over!!!!! I am thrilled for him. I am also a bit more anxious now. Ha  Since Andrew is usually at work when we head out to the pool, I am responsible for three lives near water by myself. Last year I was a nervous wreck for the first couple of weeks, until I could assess everyone's individual abilities and figured out what worked for us to have a good time but stay safe. This year I was totally fine, as Ceilidh is a pretty strong swimmer and Graeme was a floaty champ. Jane still uses me as a floaty. :/  Now that Graeme has decided to swim, we had to review our water safety rules! He was so proud of himself. Maybe I am in denial that they are growing up, but I am constantly amazed at how they continually accomplish new things. I definitely want to live in reality ;), but I hope I never lose my amazement of these three miracles!

A steady slow

This summer has been pretty slow and enjoyable, but we have also had something happening every few days or so. The summer reading program, a few dance camps, trips planned, people visiting, etc. I have enjoyed this actually. We have an activity to keep the pace of 'normal' life flowing for a few days, but then freedom to let them wear their pjs the whole day or an evening drive past bedtime for most of the week. I am totally going to miss this come Fall!

These are just a few pictures from our 'steady slow' this month! :)

Lauralei and Gracelyn came to visit!!!

I wish all the Smoak children had been able to visit, but we are thankful to  have spent some time with these girls!

My beautiful nieces

A little morning exercise! HA

Jane's new haircut. :)

So thankful for her heart. I'm saving this forever.  *tear*

Aunt Susanna came and shared her love and talent during our mail week! She talked to them about the importance of letter writing, thank you notes, and the proper ways to do all this. We had a lot of fun. Thanks, Susanna!

Jane was super proud of her letter and asked me to take a picture! ;)

Andrew took me to see Lionel Richie in concert this past week!!! It was awesome. Jane had some difficulty going to sleep with the babysitter, so we found the girls like this when we got home. So sweet! Ceilidh really is a wonderful and nurturing sister.

Andrew and Graeme had a 'Daddy/Graeme date' to see Planes: Fire and Rescue. He was so excited that he had a count down throughout the week. He also told his sunday school class how thankful he was for his daddy and the movie date during prayer time. I know I am biased, but he is adorable! And btw, the boys loved the movie!

Happy Birthday, America (and Caitlin)!

For some reason, it only allows uploads at the beginning. This is a hilarious video of Jane trying to copy Ceilidh as she did cartwheels down the beach!

July 4th is usually celebrated around here with the best parade this side of the Mississippi ;), and fireworks at the horse track in Pinehurst. This year though, my in-laws decided to take my sis-in-law, Caitlin, to the beach for a belated birthday gift. Since we normally enjoy the 4th festivities together, they graciously invited everyone to join them. After that was in the works, my parents and I decided to spend the beginning of the week together as well. So, my awesome husband stayed home for a few days to work; while I spent the week playing at the beach! ha I actually did feel slightly guilty, but maybe not enough that we wouldn't do it again. ;)

We had a wonderful time with everyone. We usually do the 'beach vacation' with the Clendenin side, so I was excited for my children to have time with my parents at the beach. My parents treated us to some pretty delicious seafood meals as well. It still makes me laugh how surprised my dad was at how much fish Graeme can eat. That boy loves some fish! Of course, someone always has to get sick while we are out of town. Graeme had a few days of a horrendous cough and nighttime breathing problems. That landed us in an urgent care during the middle of the week, but thankfully the doctor felt it was just a cold that aggravated potential nighttime asthma. He hasn't been officially diagnosed, but I was told to investigate it further with his doctor here at home.

After Andrew got to the beach mid week, Hurricane Arthur decided to stroll up the Atlantic seaboard.
:( Thankfully, we just got a bunch of rain and wind; but I felt horrible that Andrew was missing more beach time! It was pretty neat to take the kids to the beach that day to see the waves though. They were impressed. ha We watched fireworks at Barefoot Landing on the 4th, and had great playtime with Jack and Judson! Jane ended up getting G's cold, which had her pretty miserable by the end of the week. Other than a sick day or two, we had a great time. As this was a spur of the moment trip, we get to do this again in August. This time, daddy is coming for the whole time! I can't wait!!!

We did at least send him a "We miss you" message! ;)

Wednesday morning watching out the window for Daddy's car to pull in!

Caitlin's hilarious s
